Cléo from 5 to 7, a French film directed by Agnès Varda in 1962, set in real time as we follow the internal turmoil of a young pop singer who is waiting on the results of a medical examination for cancer. This film is visually stunning as it captures the beauty of Paris’ life back in the 60s. The film is almost “documentary” like with quite a few long takes following Cléo wandering around streets. Varda did an amazing job in leading us slowly into Cléo’s emotional ups and downs. I noticed there are few scenes when Cléo is walking into some sort of shadows (in the tunnel or under a tree), that’s when she is being honest with her fear of death. But this is not all about death because Varda secretly places new life here and there (the little kitty or the little boy playing the piano) to represent death is also the beginning of life.
Watch this, if you haven’t, you might find new meanings to life.
P.S. One of my favorite scenes is when Cléo sings Sans Toi, such a beautiful song. Here’s the lyric and video clip:
With all doors open wide
With the wind rushing through
I’m like an empty house
Without you
Without you
Like a deserted isle
Invaded by the sea
My sands slip away
Without you
Without you
Beauty wasted
Cold and naked
How can my body dream
Without you
Without you
Gnawed away by despair
My body decays
On a crystal bier
Without you
Without you
If you wait too long
I’ll have been laid to rest
Ashen, pale and alone
Without you
Without you
Without you

A brother-sister duo, Angus & Julia Stone‘s latest album Down The Way has been a great companion for my Sunday mornings. The music is soft, Julia’s voice is especially memorizing. However, my favorite from the album is sung by Angus – Big Jet Plane. Listen to some of their songs here.

Big Jet Plane
She said “hello mister, please to meet ya”
I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her
She smelled of daisies, smelled of daisies
She drive me crazy, drive me crazy
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Be my lover, my lady river
Can I take ya, take ya higher
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna hold ya, gonna kiss ya in my arms
Gonna take ya away from harm
Gonna hold ya, gonna kiss ya in my arms
Gonna take ya away from harm
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Herb & Dorothy is a documentary following an ordinary couple with an extraordinary collections of more than 4,000 pieces of art. The film proves that collecting art isn’t just for the rich and famous. I enjoyed watching Herb and Dorothy with their passion for art and they are just too adorable! Highly recommend this film and be inspired that money isn’t everything, your passion is what keeps you going.

On a very rare occasion that I would listen to an entire album without skipping one song, but I did when Local Natives‘ debut album Gorilla Manor was playing in my car. Starting from the song Wide Eyes down to Sticky Thread, every song captured me with the beat, the lyrics, the use of instruments, the vocals… Highly recommend this album.

Who Knows Who Cares
I’ve been going down
down into the river baby
listen to the sound
it’s something only god knows
you figure it out, I can’t stay
water’s in the clouds
is my life about to change?
who knows, who cares
so we took a van down to colorado
where we ran into the dead
I took you by the hand
know that even with your doubts, it’s ok
take into account that it’s not about to change
who knows, who cares
you could let it down
jump into the river baby
easy as it sounds
it’s never quite as easily done
the current has us now, it’s ok
take into account that it’s all about to change
who knows, who cares
no one’s been there
but I don’t care
I know all have been there
I don’t care
I know
One of my favorite bands, Mates of State, just made an announcement of their Summer new release, Crushes. The album will include versions of songs by Belle and Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and the Mars Volta (!!!). Listen to a free sample of the album’s opening song, Laura (original by Girls), at their site. I’m in love already! *Thanks to Pitchfork for the info!*
